The 60th Conference of the Society for Science on Form at Toyo University
November 5 〜 7, 2005

November 5, Saturday
Mr. Paul Hildebrandt, president of Zometool Inc and his niece Kathryn visited Japan to be part of this conference. This is their first visit to Japan. The model they built is called "Star of Hope" with using blue and special white struts. 3 mutually perpendicular Golden Mean rectangles define an icosahedron which is stellated.  Ruled (minimal) surfaces are built in the spaces between each 2 adjacent isosceles triangles of the stellation. Paul and Kathryn built it within 30 minutes. This is the of the Paul’s favorite models. The hall is full of masterpieces on FORMS. There were some Zomeworks
by the members exhibited as well. Paul saya “It is possible to build every form in this world with Zometool.” TheZome artists can build such models as dragons. In 2006Bridges,
they plan to build Zome permanent sculpture in London. At the party in the evening, we met Dr. Miyazaki and many reserchers. The Society is celebrating the 20th anniversary this year. They have been having 3 conferences a year every year in 20years. This shows the devotion and the extraordinary enthusiasm on the study on forms and efforts of the members of the society.http://wwwsoc.nii.ac.jp/form/

November 6, Sunday
Paul, Kathryn and Mr. Maehata, our chairman, held the workshop at the World Art Museum for Children inOkazaki. They built Polytope with Zome parts with many children.  4 dimensional shape is hard to understand for adults. I wonder how does the four dimentional object look to the children when they see them., apart from the theory.
They were so amazed at the masterpiece they built. Paul and Kathryn handled Zome parts like a part of their own body. Paul calls Zometool “A New language for understanding the structure of shape” and they seems to speak the language very fluently.

November 7, Monday
Paul gave his presentation, "Introduction to Zome: A New language for understanding the structure of shape” at 2 pm in the conference of Society for Science on Form .There were about a hundred members among the audience. With through   preparation, he explained the basic theory of Zome. There was asuggestion among the audience that they would like to have flexible struts and big nodes for children. According to Paul, they might develop the transparent, black and short struts for experts. Kathryn built a new construction kit, “Leonardo Sticks”with which you can build a dome without one single nail. The 60th Conference closed in success with many speeches and exhibitions.
